West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday refuted claims that she offered money to the family of the Kolkata doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital. Addressing the reports, Banerjee clarified, “I visited the victim’s family, but I did not offer them money. I only spoke about potential compensation as per the Court’s orders.”
During her visit, Banerjee expressed her government’s support, stating, “I told the deceased doctor’s parents that if they wished to do something in their daughter’s memory, our government would stand with them.”
Banerjee emphasized her preference for resolving the matter through dialogue, saying, “I don’t want to take action against anyone; I prefer resolving issues through discussion.”
She also revealed that Kolkata Commissioner of Police Vineet Kumar Goyal had considered resigning after the incident. However, Banerjee added that the state needed someone well-versed in law and order, especially with Durga Puja approaching.
