MP Ravindra Waikar Demands Faster Konkan Railway Expansion and Increased Use of Marathi in Railways

New Delhi: After Marathi was granted the status of a classical language, MP Ravindra Waikar from Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging him to promote the use of Marathi in Maharashtra’s railway administration and expedite the Konkan Railway’s double-tracking project.

Push for Multi-Modal Connectivity at Jogeshwari Terminus

During a meeting in the Lok Sabha chamber on Thursday, Waikar emphasized the need to develop multi-modal connectivity at Jogeshwari Terminus. He suggested integrating the terminus with metro and other public transport systems while developing it with modern amenities on the lines of Hong Kong. He also proposed parking spaces, hotels, malls, and improved sanitation facilities.

Konkan Railway Double-Tracking and Merger Issue

Waikar strongly demanded the immediate commencement of double-tracking work on the 370 km-long Konkan Railway route. He reminded the minister that the central government had assured a budget meeting on this matter, but no action had been taken yet.

Additionally, although the Konkan Railway is an independent corporation, the governments of Goa and Maharashtra have expressed willingness to merge it with Indian Railways. The railway minister reportedly gave in-principle approval for this merger.

Infrastructure Development for Konkan Railway

With an estimated cost of ₹20,000 crore for double-tracking, Waikar stressed that the project is crucial for the convenience of millions of daily passengers. He also called for a survey of old bridges and tunnels to ensure necessary repairs.

MP Waikar stated that the railway minister responded positively to all these demands, raising hopes for significant improvements in Maharashtra’s railway infrastructure soon.
