Two Cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Detected in Karnataka, No Cause for Alarm

New Delhi: In a routine surveillance exercise, two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been identified in Karnataka, health authorities confirmed on Monday, January 6. HMPV is a respiratory virus that typically causes mild to moderate symptoms similar to influenza.

The Ministry of Health reassured the public, stating that the surveillance system remains robust, and there is no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) cases in the country.

Experts emphasize that while HMPV is a known pathogen, it rarely leads to severe illness in healthy individuals. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and immunocompromised, are advised to exercise caution.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring early detection and preventive measures to keep the population safe.
